How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried check here to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil here pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available particularly when you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer
